Chapter * 36 *

Heart pumping out oxygen, Margo leaned back heavily against the car seat.

Before she could reply, Jake said, "Wait--don't answer. You're only going to say--"

"I don't know."

"--You don't know," he pronounced at the same time. "Yeah, what I thought." He turned down another street, bumped over a set of railroad tracks, and found himself in Del Ray again, not too far from Dottie MacKay's. He pulled into the side streets, drove around the block, and back out to Montgomery. The blue car was gone.

Margo closed her eyes, her erratic breathing still not under control. "Why would the DC police try to gun us down?"

"No reason. They need you to build their case. And besides, last I looked, murder was illegal."

"And it wasn't our friends from Aunt Frances's house."

"Didn't look like them."

"So what does that mean?"

"That you are one popular chick."

Yeah, but with whom? And why? She tried to push through the fog of confusion. "What do we know? Can you check on the guys who were at the house yesterday?"

"I'm working on it." Or he would be when he could get to the surveillance room.

She was frowning. "What about the picture in Frank's house?"

"The two of you were embracing."

"It wasn't me, Jake. You've got to believe that."

"It was you, babe. I know what I saw."

Her stomach twisted. "Could it have been doctored?"

"Yeah, sure. But by who?"

She sighed. What was she missing?

Only the last month.

"How about Warner Park," Jake said. "Think you could have written it down wrong? There's a Water Park in Manassas."

She shook her head. Another blank. "I don't know."

"Well the closest one is Nashville. Chicago and Wisconsin after that. And then the Caribbean."

"If I could see them. Maybe it would jog something."

"There are pictures on the Net. I could get you in on satellite. We might have some close enough views. But we'll need a computer for that. I've got a laptop in the car."

They looked at each other. His car was still parked behind the Foxhall Road house, a place neither one of them wanted to return to.

"Brewster said they checked, and it was empty," she said.

Jake didn't like it, but he had a solid reason for returning to the house: the surveillance-room tape of the four men from yesterday. "Okay. If it looks clear, we'll grab my laptop and head out. Won't take five minutes."

Starting a database search would be easy. The hard part would be getting down to the room without Margo knowing.

He looked over at her. The wind through the shattered back windows made a mockery of her hair, which whipped around her head and flew out behind her. He remembered that hair from the night before. A sudden tightening in his groin brought the heat back, and he wondered if she'd need his services again. Soon. As habits went, he could think of worse.

When they got to Foxhall Road, Jake crawled by, checking the house for surveillance, for anything that looked out of the ordinary. He went around the block and reconnoitered again.
